Finding the right solution for my ground deploy solar array took quite some time. Many people on social media showcase MC4 connectors as the ultimate portable solution, but they are not. MC4 connectors are not only difficult to plug and unplug, but they are also designed to be completely secure and waterproof. It's a shame the manufacturers do not mention this more prominently as, most portable panels are shipped with MC4 connectors form factory and their marketing matierials show pictures with them being hooked up using MC4 while hanging out on a beach, a the park, or campsite.If you are a camper, boondocker, or someone living off-grid who needs to move their panels around frequently and often takes them down due to weather, or travel from place to place, do not rely on MC4 connectors for their longevity. They are not meant to withstand hundreds of cycles and will wear out sooner than you think. Your next best bet are XT60 connectors, which are not weather-rated, do not lock in place, and eventually wear out too.For my ground deploy array on my trailer, I use SAE connectors. You can search for them under SAE 2-pin, SAE J928, or SAE Battery Tender Plug. These connectors are nearly identical to standard XLR microphone or speaker plugs but have only two pins instead of three. They still have the same awesome metal lock lever to fully secure the plug in the socket. These are industrial parts, so not many manufacturers online to find receptacles from. This particular item pairs very well with the Furrion solar receptacle, which you can also find on Amazon or through an online search. I’ve included a picture of what the receptacle looks like. This is your best bet for a good, safe, and long-lasting portable solar array connection to your trailer, RV, cabin in the woods (if code compliant or no code applies), etc.The issue with MC4 connectors is that they are not rated to be plugged and unplugged more than a few dozen times over their lifespan. They are not designed for frequent use and will fail sooner than expected. See my pics of the matching receptacle for this particular plug!And, most of all, please be sensible! Most portable solar panels these days are 21V VOC, so low voltage and not too dangerous, but for those of you who try to juice out every Watt out of your array, connect multiple panels in series to raise the voltage and alleviate power loss over larger cable lengths, just be sure to read the user manuals and know your specs in terms of voltage and amperage for your panels, cables, plugs and receptacles or MPPTs.I have a 400W portable panel from Renogy and was surprised to find out that it is actually two 200W panels connected in series, so my VOC voltage is awfully close to the 48V limit for high voltage, which can (and will) shock you when not careful. Shenanigans with panels connected in series and voltages far above 20V, using unsealed XT60 splitters, in wet grass covered in morning dew, or even slight drizzle, can make it for a "shocking" (pun intended) and a very bad camping day.
